The Apex Predator Enclosure

A New Chapter in Wildlife Care and Conservation

Both black bears and mountain lions play essential roles in maintaining healthy ecosystems, but as human development, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict increasingly affect their lives in the wild, young animals are often found orphaned and in need of specialized care. The Apex Predator Enclosure expands SCWR's ability to meet these needs and return these animals to their lives in the wild. Created through years of planning, dedicated work, and generous community support, the APE represents an important step forward into the care and conservation of these species.

Care That Prepares Them for the Wild

Wildlife rehabilitation for black bears and mountain lions means more than providing food and shelter. It requires enrichment that allow young animals to develop strength, coordination, and natural behaviors while minimizing unnecessary human contact.

The Apex Predator Enclosure was designed to help meet those needs, giving these animals space to climb, explore, play, and develop as they prepare for the next stage of their lives, in the wild.

Built Around Their Needs

Spanning more than 18,000 square feet, the Apex Predator Enclosure was designed with the specialized care of young predators in mind, giving them ample space to grow and thrive while in care.

Made Possible together

The Apex Predator Enclosure was only made possible by our generous community who came together to fund, plan, and build this state-of-the-art facility.

How to Help Into the Future

Building the Apex Predator Enclosure was the first step. Providing the ongoing care these young predators need as they grow and develop takes continued dedication and community support.

From nutritious food and natural enrichment to medical care and transportation, every part of their rehabilitation plays a role in preparing them for a return to the wild. There are several ways you can help make that care possible:

    Donate Food
Every fall, the bear cubs in our care know when winter is coming, and their instincts to prepare kick into high gear. This time of year is known as hyperphagia, when bears naturally increase their food intake to build energy reserves for winter. In the wild, bears spend much of the fall searching for calorie-rich foods, following seasonal food sources, and taking advantage of every opportunity to forage.

For our young patients, these instincts are just as strong. As their appetites grow, we work to provide nutritious food and opportunities to engage in natural behaviors that will support their development and eventual return to their homes in the wild.

During this time of year, our wildlife rescue is providing thousands of pounds of food per month to support all the animals in our care and your support is critical.

    Provide Enrichment Materials
Branches and other natural materials give these animals opportunities to explore, climb, investigate, and engage in behaviors that support their physical and mental development. If you are able to provide branches for enrichment, or if you live within 20 minutes of our center and have trees on your property that our team can cut from, please call us at 707-992-0274.

    Make a Financial Donation

Your financial support helps cover the essential costs of wildlife rehabilitation, including veterinary care, medications, food, and transportation.

The enclosure provides a place for these animals to grow. With your help, we can continue providing the care and resources they need for the best possible chance of returning to the wild.

The Work Continues with your support

Building the Apex Predator Enclosure was an important milestone, but the work continues every day. Your support helps provide the ongoing care, nourishment, and enrichment these animals need throughout their rehabilitation.

    A Note About Visiting

The Apex Predator Enclosure is a dedicated wildlife rehabilitation space and is not open to public viewing. Limiting human activity helps us prioritize the animals' care and support their development with the goal of returning them to the wild.
